What is ovulation?
Ovulation is the process when a mature egg is released from the ovary into the fallopian tube. This is the most fertile period of the menstrual cycle, when the chance of conception is highest. Ovulation typically occurs about 14 days before the start of the next period.
How to calculate ovulation date?
The ovulation date is calculated using the formula: Ovulation date = Last menstrual period + (cycle length – 14) days. For example, if your last period started on January 1 and your cycle is 28 days, ovulation is expected on January 15.
What is the fertile window?
The fertile window is the period during which conception is most likely. It spans 6 days: the 5 days before ovulation and the day of ovulation itself. Sperm can survive in the female body for up to 5 days, while an egg remains viable for about 12–24 hours after ovulation. Intercourse during the 2–3 days leading up to ovulation carries the highest probability of conception.
What is a normal cycle length?
A normal menstrual cycle lasts between 21 and 35 days. The average length is 28 days. Cycle length is measured from the first day of one period to the first day of the next. If your cycle is irregular, the actual ovulation date may differ from the calculated estimate.
What are the signs of ovulation?
Common signs of ovulation include: changes in cervical mucus (it becomes clear and stretchy), a slight rise in basal body temperature, mild lower abdominal pain (mittelschmerz), increased libido and breast tenderness.
How can you track ovulation if your cycle is irregular?
Calendar-based calculation is unreliable for irregular cycles. Three methods help: (1) Ovulation predictor kits (OPKs) detect the LH surge in urine 24–36 hours before ovulation — the most practical option for irregular cycles. (2) Basal body temperature (BBT) charting — take your temperature at the same time every morning before getting up; a sustained rise of about 0.2°C signals ovulation has occurred. (3) Monitoring cervical mucus for an egg-white consistency indicates peak fertility. Combining OPKs with BBT charting gives the most reliable picture.
How accurate is the ovulation calculator?
This calculator provides an estimated ovulation date based on a regular menstrual cycle. The actual ovulation date may vary due to stress, illness, weight changes or other factors. It is most reliable for women with regular cycles. Staying well-nourished and hydrated supports cycle regularity — check our water intake calculator and BMI calculator for general health guidance. Always consult your doctor for a medical fertility assessment and do not rely on this calculator as the sole method of contraception.
