What is an area converter?
An area converter is an online tool that lets you quickly convert between area units. It supports square meters, square centimeters, square kilometers, hectares, acres, square feet and square yards.
How to convert area units?
Select the source unit, enter an area value and choose the target unit. The converter instantly calculates the precise result.
What are the area conversion formulas?
Key area conversion formulas:
- 1 square meter = 10,000 cm² = 10.7639 sq ft
- 1 hectare = 10,000 m² = 2.47105 acres
- 1 acre = 4,046.86 m² = 0.404686 hectares
- 1 square kilometer = 1,000,000 m² = 100 hectares
- 1 square foot = 0.092903 m²
What are some area conversion examples?
Apartment: 65 m² = 699.65 sq ft. A typical two-bedroom apartment size.
Land plot: 1000 m² = 0.1 hectares = 0.247 acres. A standard residential lot.
Farm: 5 hectares = 12.36 acres. Useful when comparing land sizes internationally.
Why are area conversion factors squared?
Area measures two dimensions, so the linear conversion factor must be applied twice. For example, 1 foot = 0.3048 meters, but 1 square foot = 0.3048 x 0.3048 = 0.092903 m². This is why the numbers look so different from length conversions — you are squaring the ratio. Forgetting to square the factor is the most common mistake when converting area units by hand. This converter handles the calculation automatically so you avoid that error.
Which countries use acres and which use hectares?
The United States and Myanmar primarily use acres for land measurement. Most other countries use hectares as the standard unit for land and agriculture. Square feet are standard for indoor property in the US, UK, Canada, and parts of Asia. Square meters are the norm in most of Europe and the rest of the world.
